Bebo Opens Platform To All Comers; Widget Effort Starts Here

By Robert Andrews

Bebo’s own version of Facebook Apps, its Bebo Platform, has now been opened to all developers. Announced in December, the platform had been beta tested privately by a clutch of launch partners since October – folks like iLike, Zombies and Mesmo TV. Now the social network is “finally deserving of the title ‘Open Applications’”, the dev team announced, meaning any user can add the Developer application and start contributing their own apps. This fires the starting gun proper on Bebo’s widget ambitions, which also include using Google’s (NSDQ: GOOG) OpenSocial effort. This effort was developed in liaison with Facebook to ensure some degree of app compatibility. Expect overlap – some of the first apps to go live this morning merely redirected to Facebook equivalents.
