X Factor Katie’s Previous Life As A Social Media Marketing Vehicle

By Robert Andrews
Originally published by paidContent paidContent, paidContent paidcontent:uk • 4th October 2010

If you thought X Factor contestant Katie Vogel/Katie Waissel/Lola Fontaine looked familiar, that’s because she’s no newcomer to the music business. Over a year ago, paidContent:UK wrote about a Bebo-style “reality” drama commissioned by Coke for its Sprite, all about Vogel’s rise through the ranks…

I interpreted the show, Green-Eyed World, frankly, as a scripted fake, designed to sell fizzy pop to pop-loving teens – branded content…

Anorak.co.uk and Mail Online now have the story on how the girl ended up with a record contract, an upcoming album and fans traveling to see her from around Europe.

In the X Factor, she fluffed her lines in both the early stages and the judges-houses stage, but, regardless of that, and despite show rules specifying disqualification for anyone with previous music-biz pedigree, Vogel/Waissel/Fontaine was nodded through to the live-show stage on Sunday night by Cheryl Cole, who told her: “I think you’re quirky, I think you’re original.”

The takeaway – media have memory.
