Mobile Social Backup Service Mobyko Selling To IMI Mobile

By Robert Andrews
Originally published by moconews, paidContent paidContent, paidContent paidcontent:uk • 7th July 2009

Hyderabad, India-based mobile content distributor IMI Mobile is buying Mobytec, the operator of mobile backup and content sharing service Mobyko, intending to pitch it to carriers as a consumer social media aggregation service. No acquisition price was disclosed.

Mobyko is a bit like Zyb, which Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) bought in 2008. Started in 2007 and with first-round funding under its belt from Eden, London-based Mobyko lets people sync their mobile contacts, calendar, photos, video, SMS and other files to its web locker, and from there to social networks.

Mobyko will continue independently but IMI will offer its services to operators. This is the latest acquisition for IMI, which bought UK digital music distributor DX3 in November, launched the IMEXmobile SMS infrastructure platform there and also bought the M2Y digital music platform from Nokia (NYSE: NOK) Siemens Networks.
