Funambol Gets $12.5 Million For Mobile Mail Sync, Signs AOL

Open-source mobile messaging platform Funambol has scored a $12.5 million second funding round to expand in to Europe and Asia. Redwood City-based Funambol, which has R&D in Italy, makes solutions to sync email across desktop apps and mobile. The round was led by Nexit Ventures and brings its funding up to $25 million. Castile Ventures joined existing investors Walden International and HIG Ventures. Funambol said it had been tapped by AOL (NYSE: TWX) to power its online and mobile mail synchronization. In February, it hooked up with mobile ad net Amobee to insert mobile ads in to its mobile email client. Release.
