The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) says Thomson Reuters (NASDAQ: TRIN) has agreed not to make UK newsroom staff compulsarily redundant, following the company’s formation in April. The newswire planned to “eliminate” 140 of its 2,500 editorial staff globally. The NUJ had been negotiating to ensure only voluntary redundancies. It last night announced it had won that right, and Thomson-Reuters has also agreed to share with it a quarterly review of staffing levels in order to monitor standards. Some 70 journalists are going for voluntary redundancy, however, Guardian.co.uk added. Thomson Reuters is planning to shed up to 650 jobs from content, technology and operations, with about 250 redundancies, plus 45 sales staff in Europe, Middle East and Africa, as it eliminates overlaps with the Canadian wire Thomson.
