Future, Gawker Will Launch Gizmodo UK Edition

Despite already having a strong portfolio of technology titles, magazine and website publisher Future is bringing a localised version of Gawker Media’s Gizmodo tech blog to the UK.

It tells paidContent Gizmodo UK will run entirely separately with no content sharing alongside its TechRadar, T3.com and MacFormat websites. Gizmodo contributing editor Kat Hannaford, a former T3.com news editor, will edit the site.

“Launching this autumn, Gizmodo UK will immediately and significantly increase Future’s technology footprint to over four million monthly UK consumers,” Future says. Future will sell the ads – the split with Nick Denton’s Gawker is unclear.

It seems Gizmodo will be “irreverent” while TechRadar will focus on product reviews and T3 is considered an “aspirational product showcase”.

France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Japan, Australia, and Brazil already had Gizmodo localisations. Gawker’s Lifehacker, Kotaku and Jalopnik also have international editions.

“Gizmodo UK allows us to speak to a completely new set of tech consumers and to offer our commercial partners even more exciting opportunities,” says Future’s tech division publishing director Nial Ferguson.

Some years back, Future – led by CEO Stevie Spring – decided to consolidate websites for its tech mags in to the TechRadar portal, along with its other respective Radars.

T3 remains the only title for which it has a proper iPad edition, despite several other replicas on iPad. iPad sales are growing by a tenth each month and have hit £2 million for the year, Future says. It will shortly launch a fan pack app edition of a forthcoming magazine which will carry Alice Cooper’s new album.
