Thomson Reuters (NASDAQ: TRIN) is expanding its mobile news service for farmers in to another part of India. Reuters Market Light offers data on crops and weather plus 17 commodity prices to agriculture workers and already claims 60,000 subscribers in the Maharashtra region. Now the wire is rolling out the service in the Punjab state, where it says it’s sold 3,000 subs, and a third state is planned by year’s end, with Reuters saying more customers now take a 12-month subscription than three-month. That farmers are plugged in to mobile data may come as a surprise – but agriculture workers need to stay abreast of all the latest crop prices and market ups and downs. Reuters boasts it’s helped Maharashtra farmers make an extra Rs 100,000 extra profit. The service comes with trading info for cotton, maize, paddy, wheat, potato, cabbage, pea, cauliflower, green chilli and kinnow.
