Video Remixer Masher Takes £250k North-East Funding

Masher, a video remix and sharing service that was spun out of BBC Worldwide, has raised a further £250,000 from the Northern Film + Media regional media agency and Northstar Ventures’ North East Creative Content Fund.

The startup will use the cash to take premises at Gateshead International Business Centre and will recruit north-east staff.

We first reported about Masher in November 2008, when it raised £375,000 from Ibis Capital and the founder of fashion retailer New Look.

It was conceived as a prototype by BBC Motion Gallery, the commercial video library that licenses clips to and from a number of broadcasters, but was acquired by the investors in July 2008.

The service lets users sequence a catalogue of video clips for which it has rights, like BBC Motion Gallery, and send the resulting, stitched-together clips to friends.

The company says the new funding brings its funding total up to £550,000.
